| Drug Indication | Infant formulas are used to supply all or part of the nutrients infants need for growth and development when breast-feeding is not adequate or when not possible. |
| Precautions | Before using the infant formula, the following should be considered: Allergies: Infant who has ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to infant formulas or allergic to any other substances, such as foods, preservatives, or dyes should be identified. Use of infant formulas: Problems may occur if the infant formula is not mixed properly or is not used under medical care. Concurrent use with other medicines:This should be considered. Other medical problems: Infant formulas should be avoided or be used with caution in case of: breathing problems, dehydration, diabetes mellitus, diarrhea, cardiac disorders, hyperglycemia, hepatic disorders, pancreas disorders, GIT disorders, renal disorders, low birth weight, premature infant. Phenylketonuria. |

1. Premature or low birth weight formula. (a) Enriched [pre term] infant formula when breast milk is not availlable, or is insurficient, a pre term formula specifically designed for low birth weight infants [premature or small for dates] should be used under strict medical supervision e.g Pre-NAN (b) Breast milk fortifier when breast milk is availlable but there is insurficient weight gain, use breast milk plus a fortifier e.g FM 85 when brreast milk is availlable to feed the low birth weight infant and the body adds weight sufficiently, continue with breast milk. 2. Full -Term starter formula[from 0 - 6 months]. (a) whey predorminant formula; When breast milk is not availlable or has been supplimented, for healthy full term infant of birth weight 2.5 - 3.5 kg use whey predorminant formula. e.g NAN-1 (b) Caseine predorminant formula. When breast milk is not availlable or has to be supplimented, for healthy full term infant of birth weight 3.5 kg and above[bigger, hungrier, faster growing infant] use caseine based infant starter formula e.g LACTOGEN - 1 (c ) Acidified formula For a healthy full term infant [ From birth] where there is need to offer increased protection in hyeginecally compromised conditions, use biologically acidified formula e.g NAN Pelargon. (d) Partially Hydrolysed formula. when breast milk is not availlable or has to be supplimented, for a healthy full term infant who is at risk of cows milk Protein allergy, eg in cases where there is family history of allergy to cow milk protein, use NAN H.A.1 3. Follow up formula [ from 6 months onwards]. (a) Moderate protein follow up formula For followup milk feeding formula from 6 months onward, when breast milk is not availlable or has to be supplimented, as complement to weaning foods use NAN -2 as follow up to NAN-1 or Lactogen 1. (b) Follow up formula with pre- biotics For followup milk feeding formula from 6 months onward, when breast milk is not availlable or has to be supplimented, as complement to weaning foods use LACTOGEN -2 ProBio as follow up to NAN-1 or Lactogen 1. NB pre bio is a unique mixture of natural soluble fibre which is the food for good bacteria in the gut. (c) Acidified followup formula. For followup milk feeding formula from 6 months onward, when breast milk is not availlable or has to be supplimented, as complement to weaning foods , continue with NAN perlagon for increased protection in hyeginically compromised conditions. (d) Partially Hydrolysed follow up formula. For followup milk feeding formula from 6 months onward, when breast milk is not availlable or has to be supplimented, as complement to weaning foods continue with use of NAN- H.A 2 as a followup for NAN H.A 1. (e) Grow up formula with pro biotics. [from 10 months onwards]. to enhance protection , use formula with pre biotics e.g NAN 3 probiotic. NB Probiotics are naturally occurring living non pathogenic organisms which promote immunity and digestive health e.g bifidobacteria lactis strain 4. Special formula (a) allergic infants with symptoms e.g eczematous rash, diarrhoea, repeated vomiting etc. Use an extensively hydrolysed formulae.g ALFARE (b) Infant with chronic diarrhoea.
